Zohran Mamdani has become the Democratic Party nominee for New York City mayor in the 2025 election.
Mamdani based his campaign on a progressive platform aimed at addressing the city’s most pressing issues. A key focus of Mamdani’s platform was the city’s housing crisis.
He proposed a rent freeze on apartments and the creation of a Social Housing Development Agency to build permanently affordable housing. His goal is to construct 200,000 new units within a decade. Another of his notable proposals was to make all city buses free to ride by 2027.
On the economic front, Mamdani advocated for raising the city’s minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030 and increasing taxes on corporations and high-earning individuals to fund his proposed social programs. These programs include the establishment of city-owned grocery stores in each district to provide cheap, healthy food and universal, no-cost childcare for young children.
Not everyone is a fan of Mamdani. On Sunday Donald Trump threatened to cut New York City off from federal funds if Mamdani “doesn’t behave himself”. Trump also called Mamdani “a communist”.
In the general election, he will face Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.
