Your grocery shopping might get a bit more expensive this year. Starting from October 1, 2025, Poland will introduce a new deposit return system (DRS) to improve its recycling rates. This new scheme is a big step towards a more environmentally friendly country and aims to meet European Union targets for collecting waste. The system will include single-use plastic bottles (up to 3 litres), reusable glass bottles (up to 1.5 litres), and metal cans (up to 1 litre).
So, how will it work? When you buy a drink in one of these containers, you will pay a small extra amount called a deposit. For plastic bottles and metal cans, the deposit will be 0.50 PLN. For reusable glass bottles, it will be 1 PLN. The idea is to encourage people to return their empty containers instead of throwing them away. You can get your deposit back when you return the empty bottle or can to a collection point.
All stores will add the deposit to the price of the drinks. However, only larger stores, those with more than 200 square meters of space, will be required to accept the returned containers and give you back your money. Smaller shops can choose to participate voluntarily. The good news for consumers is that you will not need a receipt to return a container and reclaim your deposit. The goal is to collect 77% of plastic bottles by 2025 and increase this to 90% by 2029.
