For one month female police officers in Surrey went undercover dressed as joggers. They ran in areas that were hotspots for catcalling. The goal was to catch people who made rude comments or acted badly towards women. This operation was a response to a local survey that showed almost half of female runners in that area did not report the behaviour to the police.
“Someone slowing down, staring, shouting, even if it’s not always criminal, it can have a huge impact on people’s everyday lives and stops women from doing something as simple as going for a run.” said Inspector Jon Vale. Surrey Police arrested 18 people during the operation.
U.K. Police also started to use Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology. This system is designed to find serious offenders. Live cameras scan faces in a crowd and if the technology found a match with a person on a watchlist, the police could then act. Since the start of the year over 1000 people have been arrested using this system.
