Warsaw has opened an underground library at one of its metro stations, offering commuters over 16,000 books to borrow. The main goal is to make reading more accessible to people who are always on the move. The library is not a traditional one with reading rooms and librarians. Instead, it is a modern, self-service book-sharing point.
The 150 square metre space has separate sections for adult and children’s books, as well as board games, and also features a special quiet zone in which people can study or work in peace. To borrow a book, you just need to have a valid city library card. The process is simple and quick, designed for the convenience of busy travelers. You can grab a book on your way to work and return it on your way back.
Metroteka is the result of a collaboration between the Targówek district, which lacked space for a new library, and the Warsaw Metro, which is struggling with a large number of vacant commercial spaces.
