Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski has made history as the second Polish astronaut to travel into space. He was part of the Axiom Mission 4 crew, which launched to the International Space Station (ISS). His journey, named “Ignis,” is a significant moment for Poland’s role in space exploration. He is the first Pole to ever visit the ISS. Many people watched live streams of the event.

Uznański-Wiśniewski is an engineer and scientist, speaks Polish, English, and French. He was chosen as a project astronaut by the European Space Agency (ESA). He follows Mirosław Hermaszewski, who was the first Pole in space in 1978.

While on the ISS, Uznański-Wiśniewski will conduct many scientific experiments, including the effects of microgravity on human health and the microbiome.

Sławek took several items to the ISS, including a Polish flag, amber from the Baltic Sea, his wedding ring (made of meteorite and a bullet), salt from Wieliczka salt mine, a book of poems by Wiesława Szymborska, and a custom poster made to celebrate the event.
